15/11/20 - Week 6
These 3 pieces were quite fun to draw, and I am quite happy with them, especially the first two, being my propriety sketches.
I enjoyed creating the texture on the bird piece, for the twig and the feathers & I feel that that is quite successful, though again I feel like I need to try to maybe get some different pencils as I just cant seem to get the tonal range I need, so this is still an issue this week.
The mammoth skull informed the final piece a lot more as I chose a deer head. I do like the sketch but I think there are some inaccuracies in the tusks, though learning about the texture here was definitely important, I found there was lots of small texture here and have tried to put this into the piece here. The skull itself was interesting to create as I found there was actually quite a lot of hard angles and edges, meaning hard shadows, something I didn't really expect from a natural form. I haven't really drawn bones before so this was an interesting experience.
As for my final piece, It was definitely a bit harder than I thought. Because we were drawing from images and I had enlarged it so much it meant there wasn't much fine detail that I could find, but I tried to use my knowledge from the mammoth skull and what information I had from the photo to find & add as much detail as possible. I still feel it looks too smooth and almost cartoon like, perhaps flat. I'm not sure if I may find something else to draw as a final piece as I am quite unsatisfied with this because of the flat effect it gives. I will do this if I get time.
